A Rockband without guitars is not as impossible as it seems, proves this Antwerp band that came out of the legendary ‘Antifare La Familia’. With their unusual blend of instruments like Accordion, clarinet, saxes, charango, Euphonium (bombardon), double bass, saxes and drums they built a wall of sound where many ‘rockbands’ can be jealous about. Rolling Rock, Modern Folklore, Old Fashioned Techno, Crazy Jazz... every style they find exiting enough will be adapted to fit the Traktor stylee.

“Some street bands are a reflection of a specific culture and others are just plain loud and lots of fun. They sop up sounds and feelings from what’s around them, are free from commercial pressure and, one would think, not too worried about being precise. Pakava It surfaced in Moscow’s club scene after winning a prize in a street band festival hosted by the club Kitaisky Lyotchik Dzhao Da a few years ago. The band was previously just a group of friends who occasionally played in pedestrian underpasses. Now, however, the group has become a regular in Moscow’s club rotation. Deze maand: het september-septet. In deze derde aflevering van de Gouden Hamers serie een samenstelling van het ‘Ensemble’ die uiteenlopend genoemd mag worden. Niet alleen lopen de leeftijden van de musici uiteen (van 21 tot 55), ook de muzikale achtergrond van de spelers is zeer divers. Dat dit echter geen beperking hoeft te zijn voor het muzikaal samenkomen van de uitgenodigde musici zal hoogstwaarschijnlijk blijken. Sterker nog, het proces van vrije improvisatie gaat louter uit van het zich ‘in staat van improvisatie’ bevinden van de spelers. Dat wil zoveel zeggen als: alle ter beschikking staande muzikale middelen hanteren om ter plekke en zonder van te voren bekend muzikaal materiaal ‘rücksichtslos’ te spelen. Er zal dus speciaal voor U, geachte bezoeker van dit concert, op 5 september 2003 vanaf 21.00 uur een aantal ‘einmalige’ composities gecomponeerd worden. Deze composities zullen gemaakt worden door door Hugo van Rooij instantaan samengestelde groepen uit de Poel van muzikanten die hierboven vermeld staat.

Lodewijk Pincoffs, de iniatiefnemer voor de ontwikkeling van de havens op zuid, wilde het hoofkantoor van zijn Rotterdamsche Handelsvereniging in twee gebouwen aan weerszijden van de Binnenhavenbrug naar ontwerp van JSC can der Wall. In het jaar dat het eerste Poortgebouw greed kwam, 1879, ging Pincoffs failliet en vluchtte hij naar Amerika. Het pand werd onder andere door het Gemeentelijk Havenbedrijf, de Holland-Amerika Lijn en het KNMI gebruikt. Een plan voor de vestiging van een eroscentrum was in 1980 defintief van de baan. Vereniging Poortgebouw deed haar intrede en de bewoners zetten zich sindsdien in om de stad te verrijken met culturele en politieke activiteiten.

Improvisation is the keyword. In the attic of the Poortgebouw, improvisation doesn’t only refer to the oft associated jazz derive (although definitely integral) rather the desire to create an unpredictable evening without a pre-defined program shaped by labels (goth-night, hiphop-night, movie-night) and codified expectations. It is a temporary open podium once a month for individuals who have an idea to test it in the company of others. Ideally, some coincidental overlaps emerge and breed something new. The dynamic of each evening created by the blurred border between audience and participants is unique and unrepeatable.

KEVORKIAN
“Hopewell Records and Kevorkian are from Czech republic and show that the Czech republic is not dead... They are doing a mixture of noise-rock, thrash and rare Gluecifer parts! Sounds very crazy but that's the way it is and it's really not bad. The sound changes between fast and sludgy noise-rock, thrashing hardcore and some nice punk melodies! But the noise-rock definitely dominates that release, dissonant parts which also have a chaotic touch are the main components of that album! At all that is very hard to describe because they really created an own sound! ... you receive a great layout with that album and weird song titles like “The most beautiful feeling is a conversation with the chef”. Crazy!”
