Agenda July 2008
< JUNE ___ AUGUST >

WEDNESDAY 2 JULY
LIVE: Frans Huxie (NL)
+ Offbeat Heroes (UK)

STARTS: 21:00 After the Eetcafé

FRANS HUXIE
Frans Huxie!

OFFBEAT HEROES
Offbeat Heroes, young lads with plenty of punk attitude, storming the crowd who were knocked back by the attitude but were won over at the end. Totaly young, raw and worth seeing before touring kills them.

SATURDAY 26 JULY

FEST: Harry Merry + Bruno + Diametrics + The Loo + Suicidal Birds + Maja Fiets Club + 9 Days on The Tree + Dog Crusher Lemonade + The Chunks ...and DJS Kneipp and Thomas + Wim v/d Herik + Sascha

After living in the Poortgebouw for more than 5 years, the time has come to move on and do something else. Poortgebouw stays, but we’re not leaving quietly
- Alex and Jan

THE PARTY KICKS OFF AT 16.00ish

WITH LIVE MUSIC FROM:

MAJA FIETS CLUB (R:DAM)
Reformed “Underground Entertainment”. A fuzzy videotape indicates cabaret with a taste for industrial-folk slapstick athems and tight Zappa slacks. Anything is possible.

DOG CRUSHER LEMONADE
"I asked Dog Crusher Lemonade to make up a description, but they failed utterly, well... I would describe their stuff in terms of instrumental post rock, somewhere in the area between Couch, Trumans Water and early 90's British shoegazer noise, with lots of tiny edges and some nice and weird harmony changes."

THE CHUNKS
Bad garage!

--- DJ’S KNEIPP & THOMAS ---

20.00ish MORE LIVE MUSIC FROM:

HARRY MERRY
Harry Merry is at the same time the guardian and the destabilizing force of his culture: Dutch folklore, which is a source of pride for him. Combining barrel organ sounds and left sided song lyrics, he expresses his viewpoints about flowers, windmills, everyday life, dating problems and even bus travels. Harry Merry is cynical and masters self-derision. His inspiration comes from an incredible radio archive, Dutch glam rock and Beatles’ 7 inches. Harry Merry proclaims himself as “the actual future of yesterday’s sound”.

BRUNO (R:DAM)
Bruno Ferro Xavier da Silva: Bass, voice
STOMA [duo with drummer Wouter van Wijk] Doodoc' s Coffee [CD Chosen Boundaries, winners vers uit de maas 1998, numerous gigs, opening for Bush in Nighttown] Glam Enterprises (GRONDrecords) [Bass on Paul Borcher's 7 + gigs] Crackremover [duo with DJ bony] not to mention the "'ad hoc" playing. Also member of "ensemble residu" and the R:IP and on top of that also plays in Dr. Schnitt and Fetish.

DIAMETRICS (DE)
From time to time, a shock's necessary for something new to happen. As is the case with DIAMETRICS, the new Noisenewwaverock Trio from bremen, Germany - formerly known as ILSE LAU. Diametrics are damn ready for your ears and eyes. They will get at you with their aesthetically dirty, consonantally discordant, metrically (In)Constant music. To be filed somewhere between contempo-rary british stuff, amphetamine reptile, early too pure, sst and the neue bremer schule.

--- DJ WIM v/d HERIK ---

23.00ish MORE LIVE MUSIC FROM

THE LOO (NL)
The LOO’s mission is to bring back true Rock ’N’Roll to the people! With a mix of Sex, Drugs and Rock N Roll to their songs and lifestyle you can expect a great live-show and a fuckin’ worse-than-ever hangover the next day! If you’re not into this shit please stay at home or go and watch some bacardi-breezer drinkin’ boyband muppets elsewhere...

SUICIDAL BIRDS (NL)
Armed with out-dated amps, ( self made) pedals, drum machine, bass guitar, guitar and the elastic strong and moving voice of singer Jessie they bring up a up raging storm, drenched in the raw passion the blues: Intense, urgent, confronting, personal, sometimes treacherously playful, exciting and inescapable. With a voice full of character, uncompromisingly distorted guitar- and vocal sounds and at times overwhelming sound-orgy, they manage to give feelings of doubt, craziness, tragedy, sex & drugs, hope and despair, believe and disbelieve
a musical format deeply rooted in the blues combined with the energy of punk emphasising the rough and readiness, weirdness and wilderness that is so essential in rock and roll.

AND THEN WE DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY

THURSDAY 31 JULY
MONSTER ZERO'S SUMMER FUN:
LIVE: The Jizz Kids (NL) + 7 Years Bad Luck (Austria)

STARTS: 20:30

THE JIZZ KIDS (NL)
Punkrock from Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Proud to serve Rally Records. Split 7" with The Guts out in early 2008. New 7" EP out in that same period also. Rocky 6 rules. BAND: Kevin Aper - vocals, guitar; Ox Accelerator - bass, vocals; Kelvin Centerfold - guitar, vocals; Erik A.C. - drums
www.myspace.com/thejizzkids

7 YEARS BAD LUCK (AUSTRIA)
Music evokes feelings -- or is it the other way around? 7yearsbadluck makes you understand both sides. This is Poppunk driven by energy, short nights and a certain kind of world weariness & heartbreak that we have heard in Samiam, Jawbreaker or The Alkaline Trio. This Austrian threesome has constantly built up a fan base step by step, bringing sweat to numerous basements and stages across Europe since 2001, not conforming to the usual Poppunk stereotypes. Over the years 7yearsbadluck has released 2 full-length albums and 2 EPs and has shared the stage with bands like The Lawrence Arms, Venerea, Useless I.D., Shelter, Ten Foot Pole, The Groovie Ghoulies, De Heideroosjes and so on.

FRIDAY 1 AUGUST
LIVE: Eugene Chadbourne (US) & Lukas Simonis + Bruno & The Monx

STARTS: 20:30

EUGENE CHADBOURNE (US) & LUKAS SIMONIS
Eugene Chadbourne plays a mean guitar and banjo. He used to front a band called Shockabilly. He sings his own kind of protest songs ("Don't Burn The Flag, Let's Burn The Bush") and performs his own kind of covers (of Black Sabbath, Albert Ayler, or J.S. Bach, often all in the same gig). He also plays free improvised music and is credited with inventing the electric rake. And Lukas Simonis should need no introducing to anyone in this town. Right?

BRUNO & THE MONKS
Readings by Vanita & Joe Monk usually include live improvised music by the authors and other sympathetic or unaccommodating musicians. Bruno F.X. da Silva is their favorite one-man orchestra.
