Why dont you get supported from the numerous public and private
funds across the Netherlands?
Yes, we have the big fondsen boek. First, look at what
they ask for, their conditions. From 23 years of experience, we
are confident to say that 99% of the funds are NOT set up for supporting
activities that are planned spontaneously or out of the need
of the moment . These funding instruments require planning that
reminds us of business plans that have to predict what
will happen atleast 6 months in advance. And document, or
better: evaluate what circuited through a year ago and
precisely how the money was used.
For
the most part, our culture happens like this: We have
contact with an artist (group) two weeks to (longest) three months
before the actual event, No matter if they are from
the Netherlands, Eastern Europe or Australia. Because these artists
equally work on non-profit basis, they often only know in the last
minute if they can actually make (afford) the travel over to Rotterdam
to cooperate with us, network or whatever. These artists have, for
whatever reason, do not have access to the paying or
more commercial cultural platforms thats why WE
let them experiment.
We
offer: a warm place, food, exchange and inspiration-and maybe some
left-over money to pay the gas. The same is valid for our in-house
productions: It is the inspiration of the moment that counts,
not always a year of developing strategies and theories. Thats
why Het Poort can react instantly on contemporary cultural, social
and political streams.
In
short: while the others are talking about authenticity
and flexibilty, we are already doing it. And therefore
are broke.
